Leatherman Tool

Leatherman ToolThe Leatherman Tools is for hard-working people everywhere – whether they are working in the dust and heat of a construction site, the cool remoteness of a forest, the rustling acreage of a farm, or the gasoline-scented spaces of a repair shop, to name just a few – are helped out immensely by having a compact tool with a number of functions readily to hand. It is for this reason that the modern multitool has flourished so much and multiplied into so many different forms.

The Leatherman Group is a relatively recent firm compared to some of its competitors, having been founded in 1975 by Tim Leatherman due to his experiences with various mechanisms during a European trip. However, despite its relative youth – or perhaps because of the vigor of that youth – it has established itself as a famous and far-reaching company, whose tools feature a whole range of different functions and generally sturdy, lasting construction.

The Leatherman Core Pocket Multitool is made to be both compact and strong – some of the lighter Leatherman tools may be more versatile, but the Core is built to the heavier standards of many lines from this company. You can apply plenty of torque to the screwdrivers without needing to worry about them shearing off, while the included saw is very tough and long enough to cut good-sized tree branches without any difficulty. The handles are well-shaped with rounded edges so that you can maintain a firm but comfortable grip while using the multitool – even if you are applying a lot of force to it.

The onboard tools open easily, but have been designed so that only one tool opens at a time, rather than a whole group opening when you only want to unfold one. All of the onboards lock open for safety and convenience. Nail nicks and thumb lifts are used for opening the tools. There are no less than three wire-cutting surfaces on the Core Pocket Multitool, which includes needlenose pliers; wire cutters – standard, hard, and stranded; electrical crimpers; a clip-point knife; a serrated knife; a file usable on metal or wood; a saw; three sizes of flat blade screwdriver and one size of Philips screwdriver; an awl with a thread loop so that you can put thread, cord, or twine through flexible substances; a ruler; a can and bottle opener; a wire stripper; and a lanyard ring.

The Leatherman Core comes with a leather sheath as well, to make it more convenient to carry and keep it safe while you are not actually using it. The leather sheath, naturally, requires a small amount of care – you should probably oil it every few months so that it will not dry out and crack over time – but in some ways, it is preferable to the ballistic nylon sheaths of Gerber multitools, having the pleasant, natural feel of leather and a more solid, hole-resistant feel as well.

Like all Leatherman tools, this one comes with a 25 year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. This is not as good as the all-inclusive limited lifetime warranty of Gerber tools, but it is still some protection for your investment. The Core is 4.5” long when closed and weighs 11 ounces – a compact but solid device made out of rust-defying stainless steel and brass.
